Income
Income was competing in Europe's most crowded peer-to-peer investment market without the one thing rivals had made non-negotiable: a mobile app. We took it from paper sketch to a deployed cross-platform product in six months, half the typical industry timeline.
2024
Global
A peer-to-peer investment platform with a loyal web-based investor base was ready to capture the mobile-first generation, and needed a product worthy of the moment.
CHALLENGE
Entering the mobile space meant doing it right from day one. Rivals had spent years refining their apps; Income's launch had to be competitive at the point of release, not a V1 that would earn credibility through iteration over time. That meant building iOS and Android to market-leading standard simultaneously, without disrupting the broader product roadmap the business was depending on in parallel. The real risk was not engineering capacity — it was alignment and integration between two independent teams building at pace.

SITUATION
Estonia and the wider Baltics are the home of European peer-to-peer investing: the category's largest platforms were built there, and investors move easily between them. In that market, a mobile app is not a differentiator — it is the minimum credible surface. Portfolio management in a pocket has become a baseline expectation, and platforms that meet investors where they live earn the day-to-day engagement that compounds into loyalty. The product operates within a tight regulatory perimeter: EEA-only investor eligibility, mandatory KYC/AML verification before any investment, SEPA-only fund flows. Income connects those investors to 11 active loan originators across Eastern Europe (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria), Western markets (Spain, UK, Kosovo), and Southeast Asia (Indonesia). Lenders are required to retain a junior share of their own loans — skin in the game — and trigger a buyback obligation after 60 days of overdue payments, returning principal and accrued interest. That structure earns investor trust at the platform level; the mobile product had to earn it at the interface level. Closing the gap meant more than shipping an app. The product had to feel simple and trustworthy to first-time and experienced investors alike, built fast, with a separate backend team running in parallel — where synchronization, not raw engineering effort, determined whether the timeline held.

SCALING ARCHITECTURE
The core decision was to treat the app as a trust-building investment product, not a mobile shell over an existing site. The build started with the investor journey — user research, prototypes, focus groups, and A/B testing — so interface decisions were settled from the onset. The product shipped as a Flutter cross-platform app: one codebase serving iOS and Android in lockstep within the six-month window. Onboarding was built around Veriff-powered identity verification — KYC/AML compliance resolved in under two minutes from within the app itself. Around that core sat intuitive loan browsing, manual and automated portfolio customization, and multi-parameter auto-invest strategies configurable by interest rate, term, loan type, geography, lender, and reinvestment preference. Frontend delivery was synchronized to the backend team so integration kept pace with the timeline rather than bottlenecking it.

KEY INSIGHT
In fintech, clarity, control, and reliable scale-proof backend architecture have to arrive together. Without them, sophisticated functionality still reads as risk to someone moving their own money.
SELECTED CAPABILITIES
Frictionless UI & User Onboarding
Integrated KYC/AML identity verification completed in under two minutes, embedded within a tutorial-guided onboarding flow built for first-time and experienced investors alike.
Portfolio Management Tools
Customizable investor accounts with manual and automated portfolio personalization options.
Live Portfolio Data Architecture
Event-driven data infrastructure keeping every balance, transaction, and account state in sync across all sessions — in real time, without polling.
Cross-Platform Mobile App (Flutter)
One shared codebase delivering native-like iOS and Android from a single build.
Qualitative User Research & Fine-Tuned UX
A seamless experience prototype built on behavioral insights and extensive A/B fine-tuning.

OUTCOME
From blank canvas to 10,000 investors in six months, on a unified cross-platform build.
Validating the investor journey before scaling the build was what made the timeline possible — by the time engineering accelerated, the flows were already proven. Income hit the market with a product competitive at launch, not one that would earn credibility through iteration. Income closed its mobile gap without stalling the broader roadmap, and gained a foundation it can extend from one codebase. Initial user reviews highlighted the intuitive UI and easy onboarding, with ample support and tutorials.
